Apple Upgrade (Klarna) reportedly lands July 28 — lease-to-own for iPhone, Mac, iPad

Apple is about to make “owning” optional. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple Upgrade — a Klarna-backed lease-to-own program — launches in the US on July 28, 2026, covering most iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches. Soft credit check. End of term: return, keep (pay off), or upgrade early (fees may apply). AppleCare+ is not bundled.

The lease math
Reported terms: up to 24 months for iPhones and Apple Watches; up to 36 months for Macs and iPads. New enrollments in the old iPhone Upgrade Program and standard Apple financing are expected to stop as Upgrade takes the lane. Budget SKUs — base iPad, Apple Watch SE, iPhone 16, MacBook Neo — are reportedly excluded. Business and education purchases: out.
“Upgrade clearly seems designed to make those hiked prices more palatable to consumers.”

Why now
RAMageddon is not a meme in Cupertino’s P&L. AI data-center demand ate memory supply; Apple already raised prices across much of the lineup (MacBook Air $1,099→$1,299, iPad Air $599→$749 in recent rounds). Leasing is how you keep ASP climbing without watching unit volume fall off a cliff — especially with John Ternus’s CEO transition and the OpenAI legal fight sharing the same news cycle.
Apple and Klarna have not officially confirmed every detail. Treat July 28 terms as Bloomberg reporting until Apple’s storefront copy goes live.

Monthly payments will not invent more NAND. They will invent more subscribers who never quite leave the upgrade treadmill.
