White House says Moonshot distilled Fable for Kimi K3 — experts call the timeline “impossible”

Washington just turned a model release into an indictment draft. White House science advisor Michael Kratsios posted that Moonshot AI “distilled Anthropic’s Fable” to build Kimi K3 — the 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight bomb that rattled US AI stocks after July 16 — and that the company built a platform to hop access methods and dodge detection. Treasury’s Scott Bessent floated blacklist talk the same day.

What the forums and labs are actually arguing

Distillation itself is not exotic — Anthropic already accused Moonshot, DeepSeek, and MiniMax of capability extraction earlier in 2026. The fresh fight is the Fable-to-K3 jump: Fable only went public July 1; K3 landed roughly two weeks later. On TechCrunch, researchers like Braden Hancock (Laude / Snorkel) call strict Fable distillation “not even frankly time” to produce a frontier-class open-weight giant.

Chips, Thailand, and the other half of the tweet

Kratsios also alleged Moonshot touched Nvidia GB300 gear — export-banned to China — including servers in Thailand. That claim travels on a different track from “they scraped Fable,” and it is the part export-control watchers are chewing on Discord and ResetEra-adjacent AI threads. Moonshot has not answered. Evidence remains assertion-level.

K3 can be brilliant and still not be a two-week xerox of Fable. Politics wants a villain. Timelines want a spreadsheet.
