Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster hits Switch 2 on July 23 — no free upgrade from Switch 1
Spira is getting another console stamp. Square Enix is bringing Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster to Nintendo Switch 2 on July 23, timed with a fresh 25th-anniversary trailer for Final Fantasy X — which originally launched July 19, 2001 on PlayStation 2.
What the Switch 2 version promises
Square’s store copy highlights full-HD remade characters/monsters/backgrounds, remastered/arranged music, International Version extras, plus quality-of-life toys like high-speed mode and no random encounters. Veterans of the PS3/Vita/PS4/PC/Switch/Xbox One remaster will recognize most of that feature list — this is a platform port of the HD package, not a from-scratch remake.
The upgrade catch
There is no free or discounted upgrade path called out for players who already bought the Switch 1 version. Expect to pay the full $49.99 / £44.99 again if you want the Switch 2 SKU. That is the sour note under an otherwise easy “yes” for handheld pilgrims who never owned Spira digitally.
If you have been saving a first playthrough for a sharper Switch screen, July 23 is the date. If you already finished Zanarkand on OLED Joy-Cons, ask yourself whether another $50 is pilgrimage or FOMO.
