Final Fantasy XIV hits Switch 2 August 4 — free trial day one, separate sub, massive install

Eorzea goes hybrid tomorrow. Final Fantasy XIV Online launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026 — early access framing in some Nintendo regions, day-and-date with the free trial that still lets new Warriors of Light play through the base game plus Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers. Square Enix just aired an extended docked/handheld gameplay stream to prove the port before the flood of Day 1 logins.

The sub and storage fine print

Critical: Switch 2 requires its own monthly subscription even if you already pay on PC or PlayStation with the same Square Enix account — cross-save yes, shared sub no. Nintendo Switch Online is not required. File size is widely flagged as enormous by Switch standards; clear space before pre-load. Starter, Complete, and Collector bundles are on the eShop alongside Dawntrail.

What comes after launch

The next expansion arc — Evercold, start of the Godless Realms Saga — is aimed at January 2027 and will be on Switch 2. Fan Fest Berlin already teased the Bastion tank job and Fourth reflection ice fantasy. For August 4, the story is simpler: can an MMO with 30M+ adventurers feel right in handheld? Square Enix is betting yes.

“FINAL FANTASY XIV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in Aug 2026… Embark on a quest… alongside more than 30 million adventurers worldwide.”

Pre-download tonight. The queue at 12:01 a.m. will not care that you still had Zelda installed.
