IBM reaches “Quantum Advantage” in complex material simulation using Heron processor

The threshold for “quantum advantage” has officially been crossed. On July 30, IBM, in partnership with Qedma Quantum Computing and Algorithmiq, announced they successfully simulated the 2D Floquet Ising model—a complex quantum material dynamic—using the IBM Quantum Heron processor.

Why this matters

Until now, quantum computers have shown promise but struggled to definitively outperform the world’s most powerful classical supercomputers on practical tasks due to error rates. By combining the 133-qubit Heron processor with Qedma’s advanced error mitigation software, the team completed a simulation that is mathematically beyond the reach of classical computing architectures.
