iOS 27 public beta puts Siri AI in your pocket — Apple’s September rebuild is already testable

The assistant that spent a decade as a punchline is finally in public beta as something else. iOS 27 — alongside iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 — ships a rebuilt Siri referred to internally as Siri AI: a conversational, multistep assistant woven through Apple Intelligence rather than a floating chatbot skin. Public beta access opened in late July; early hands-on coverage on August 1 frames it as the first Siri worth relying on for real errands, not just timers and weather.

What actually changed

Siri AI holds back-and-forth conversations, draws on personal context for complex tasks, and keeps a synced conversation history across devices in a dedicated Siri app — Recent Conversations or a fresh New Conversation on open. Hands-on testers highlight quieter UX than Gemini or ChatGPT: fewer “as an AI” throat-clears, more OS-native actions. Apple still routes heavier lifts through cloud partners (Google Gemini has been widely reported for complex tasks) while pitching on-device and Private Cloud Compute as the privacy differentiator versus fully cloud assistants.

September is the real ship date

Apple has not named a day, but the historical pattern — second week of September with new iPhone hardware — points to around Monday, September 14. Public beta build two is already out; more betas will land through summer. Apple’s usual advice still applies: try it on a secondary device, not the phone that holds your bank apps and 2FA.

“This is one of the most consequential upgrades to the Apple assistant yet — the technology is woven quietly into the operating system rather than shouting AI from the rooftops.”

If you have been waiting for Siri to stop being a demo failure, the public beta is the audition. September is opening night.
