Gemini for Mac adds Intelligent Dictation + screen-aware AI — Fn-key rival to Apple Intelligence
Apple’s desktop AI just got a cloud-shaped rival with a Fn key. Google is rolling Intelligent Dictation and Screen-aware Reasoning to the Gemini macOS app worldwide from July 29 (English first, more languages later in 2026) — long-press Fn for cleaned-up voice-to-text that lands directly in the frontmost document, no paste gymnastics.

What Screen-aware Reasoning actually does
Opt in and Gemini can read what’s on screen, synthesize whole Finder folders, and write into open windows. Google’s demo prompt juggles dietary notes, restaurant menus, an expenses policy, a schedule correction, and a Maps search for boba — without the user opening the files. Highlight text in any app, ask for an executive summary, and the rewrite drops in place. ChatGPT Desktop still parks output in a floating pane; Apple Intelligence still won’t do that folder-wide multi-file pass from chat.
The privacy trade you cannot ignore
Gemini on Mac is cloud-bound through your Google account. You do not get Apple’s on-device models or Private Cloud Compute promises. Default Gemini Apps policy still allows retention and human review. Power users who want zero-copy desktop AI will love the Fn workflow; privacy-first Mac shops will keep Apple Intelligence on the shortlist.
