PlayStation ends physical disc production for new games in January 2028
The Blu-ray era for new PlayStation games has an end date. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation Blog states that physical disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles stops in January 2028 — after that, new titles ship via PlayStation Store and retail digital formats only.

What is safe — and what is not
Games already out, or launching before January 2028 on disc, are explicitly unaffected. Reporting around the Thalgau, Austria DADC plant describes a major retool toward optical microlenses and a sharp cut in daily disc output — the manufacturing story behind the storefront policy. Partner notes suggest reorder rights for pre-2028 SKUs may continue under new ordering rules; post-2028 “discs” become codes in boxes.
Why collectors are loud
Digital delistings and license sunsets are the counter-argument every comment section is already writing. Sony frames the move as matching how most players already buy. The hardware read — disc-free next-gen consoles — is implication, not a named PS6 spec sheet. Laufey shipping on disc in 2027 fits the pre-deadline window on purpose.
