Spotify’s AI week: Talk to Spotify rolls out — and 75 million “slop” tracks got purged

Spotify is fighting AI on two fronts this month: inviting it into the player as a conversational butler, and kicking millions of low-effort AI tracks off the shelves. The Talk to Spotify beta — typed or spoken chat inside Home and Now Playing — is rolling to Premium users 18+ in the US, Ireland, and Sweden. Separately, director of global artist marketing and policy Sam Duboff confirmed the company has removed more than 75 million spam-like tracks in its war on AI “slop.”

Talk to Spotify: what it does

Ask it to play artists you have not heard, refine toward “more upbeat,” dig into album lore, or query your own listening history (“When did I first play this?”). Spotify says the stack mixes in-house models with outside providers depending on the task. It is the chat layer that used to live in ChatGPT plugins — now kept inside Spotify’s own app so the conversation never leaves the meter.

The 75 million purge

Roughly 100,000 tracks hit Spotify daily; industry estimates put AI-generated uploads near half of new music on streaming platforms. Duboff’s 75 million removals are the blunt instrument against spam farms powered by tools like Suno and Google Lyria. The hard part — which Spotify admits — is drawing a line between artist-assisted AI production and industrial sludge that farms playlist algorithms.
