Canceled Virtual Boy games Zero Racers and D-Hopper finally launch on NSO August 4
Nintendo just un-canceled history. Zero Racers and D-Hopper — Virtual Boy games that never reached shelves after Nintendo killed the headset console in 1996 — join the Virtual Boy library on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on August 4, 2026. For the first time, players can legally play both titles on modern hardware instead of hunting prototypes and preservation dumps.
More than a ROM dump
Nintendo is also expanding the Virtual Boy application’s display options with new color modes, softening the original blood-red stereoscopic look that defined (and doomed) the hardware. That quality-of-life pass matters as much as the games: the VB app is no longer a novelty museum piece if Nintendo keeps feeding it lost software and better presentation.
Why August 4 is a weirdly big retro day
The same week Beast of Reincarnation and Big Walk hit subscription services, Nintendo is shipping archaeology. Official releases of canceled first-party software decades later remain rare — most “lost” games stay in private collections or fan archives. Pair this with Super Mario Sunshine’s August 13 GameCube Classics drop and Expansion Pack subscribers get a two-week retro sandwich that justifies the higher tier better than another NES filler pack.
“Zero Racers and D-Hopper will officially launch through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on August 4 — nearly three decades after the Virtual Boy was discontinued.”

Grab the Expansion Pack before Tuesday if red stereoscopic racing and a lost hopper platformer sound like your kind of museum ticket. History rarely restocks.
