Call of Duty movie locked to the Modern Warfare universe — theaters June 30, 2028

The Call of Duty movie finally picked a lane. At Fanatics Fest in New York, director and co-writer Peter Berg told the Call of Duty in Culture panel that Paramount’s big-screen adaptation will be set in the Modern Warfare universe — not WWII, not a cartoon Black Ops riff.

Who is making it
Berg directs and co-writes with Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone / Lioness / Landman orbit). Paramount is producing with Activision; David Glasser’s 101 Studios is also attached. Plot and cast remain under wraps. The studio has already dated the film for June 30, 2028 — landing near Call of Duty’s 25th anniversary as a franchise.

Why Modern Warfare was the obvious bet
Modern Warfare is the CoD brand civilians recognize: Captain Price, Task Force 141, contemporary geopolitics, and a reboot timeline that still has a new game (Modern Warfare 4) launching October 23, 2026. Pairing a 2028 film with an active MW pipeline is franchise hygiene — the movie can borrow iconography without needing audiences to memorize every Black Ops alternate history.
Authenticity talk is already in the marketing water (Berg and Sheridan both lean special-ops adjacent). Whether that survives Hollywood’s need for a three-act movie remains the 2028 question. For now: universe confirmed, date confirmed, casting still a blank loadout screen.
